Genus:Schlumbergera
Species:gaertneri
Family:Cactaceae
The Easter Cactus is an epiphytic houseplant that thrives in light shade and requires well-draining soil. While it can withstand periods of dryness, excessive moisture can lead to root rot. This plant typically flowers in the spring, coinciding with Easter, which is how it got its name.
Often mistaken for the Thanksgiving Cactus (Schlumbergera truncata) and the Christmas Cactus (Schlumbergera x buckleyi), the Easter Cactus can be distinguished by its flattened stems that feature rounded scallops. In contrast, the Christmas Cactus has teardrop-shaped scallops, while the Thanksgiving Cactus displays spiny, claw-like edges on its stem segments. The Easter Cactus is less commonly found and is more challenging to care for than its relatives, as it tends to drop stem segments if it is either overwatered or underwatered.
For optimal growth, place it in a bright location that avoids direct sunlight, using moist, well-draining cactus potting soil. This plant thrives in high humidity, so misting it, using a saucer filled with rocks and water beneath the pot, or positioning it in a bathroom can be beneficial. During its active growth phase, fertilize it monthly. To encourage abundant blooms, consider moving the plant outdoors in the summer to a shaded, protected area, which will help strengthen new growth and promote flower bud development. Bring it back inside in the fall. The Easter Cactus will not produce flower buds until the following year, typically around February to March, as the days begin to lengthen, with blooms generally appearing between late March and May.
