Phonetic Spelling:shlum-BER-ger-uh rus-sel-lee-AY-nuh
Genus:Schlumbergera
Species:russelliana
Family:Cactaceae
The Thanksgiving or Christmas Cactus features green, leafless stems that function as leaves for photosynthesis. These stems consist of flattened segments, ranging from 0.5 to 1.5 inches in length and 1/2 to 3/4 inch in width. Notches can be found along the edges of these segments, where areoles with one to two bristles emerge, as well as at the tips of the stems where flower buds develop. The vibrant flowers, typically in shades of pink, exhibit a unique "flower within a flower" appearance. This plant is indigenous to the coastal mountains of southeastern Brazil, where it commonly grows as an epiphyte in rainforest trees.
Most commercially available specimens today are hybrids of S. russelliana and S. truncata, with the specific hybrid influencing the blooming period. There are more than 200 cultivars of these cacti, offering a wide range of flower colors.
For optimal growth, plant them in light, well-draining soil and ensure they receive bright light. Maintain moisture levels without overwatering. These cacti thrive when placed outdoors during the summer and fall, as the shorter, cooler days of autumn encourage flower bud formation.
