Phonetic Spelling:STYE-racks juh-PON-ih-kus
Genus:Styrax
Species:japonicus
Family:Styracaceae
In 1985, the renowned plantsman from NC State University, the late JC Raulston, discovered this remarkable wild plant during a trip to Korea. It exhibited remarkable vigor and stood out significantly from the other native Japanese snowbell trees he encountered. The flowers, resembling stars, measure about 1 inch in diameter, which is larger than most within this species.
The leaves of this deciduous tree are a deep green and have a leathery feel. The 'Emerald Pagoda' variety features above-average leaf size. This ornamental tree thrives in full sunlight or partial shade and prefers soil that is rich in organic matter while ensuring good drainage. Ideally, it should be planted in a location that receives a few hours of shade each day.
The 'Emerald Pagoda' is characterized by its upright, vase-like shape and is relatively slow-growing. After ten years, it can reach a height of 10 feet with a spread of 8 feet. When fully mature, it can grow up to 30 feet tall and 20 feet wide. This tree makes an excellent choice for patios, allowing close-up views of its intriguing bark and fragrant flowers. It is particularly suitable for spaces where a smaller tree is desired.
