Bloomerang is recognized for its compact, rounded shape, usually measuring 5 feet by 5 feet, with some dwarf varieties reaching 3 feet or less. This lilac is known for its strong fragrance and produces flowers on both new and old growth. It typically showcases its first significant bloom in mid-May, akin to other lilac species. After a resting period in June, it resumes blooming in July and continues to flower throughout the summer until frost arrives. The panicles produced during the summer and fall are smaller than those in spring but exhibit a deeper color. To encourage reblooming, it is advisable to fertilize in early spring once the ground has thawed and again after the initial spring flowering.
For optimal growth, Bloomerang thrives in organically rich, moist soils that are neutral to slightly alkaline, provided they have good drainage and air circulation. It should be planted in full sunlight and well-drained soil, as it cannot withstand overly wet conditions, similar to other lilac varieties.
Like most lilacs, Bloomerang requires a cold period to bloom effectively, which is why these plants are generally not well-suited for warmer climates. They can endure warm weather up to zone 7 but will produce the best reblooming results in cooler summers or when protected from the intense afternoon heat.
