Phonetic Spelling:trad-es-KAN-tee-uh

Genus:Tradescantia

Species:hirsuticaulis

Family:Commelinaceae

Hairy Spiderwort is a perennial plant native to North Carolina, belonging to the Commelinaceae family. It is relatively rare, making it unlikely for you to come across a patch of these plants in the wild. Typically, it thrives in dry, open rocky woodlands, often found near rock outcrops and along bluffs. Beyond the mountains of North Carolina, this species can also be spotted in the mid to southeastern regions of the United States, where it grows in similar dry, rocky habitats.

In warmer regions, such as the Mediterranean, deserts, temperate zones, or tropical areas, Hairy Spiderwort is cultivated as a perennial evergreen. However, in colder climates, it tends to behave more like an annual.

To care for this plant, consider applying mulch to help retain moisture. When grown as a perennial, ensure it has enough space to spread or trail. Pruning should be carried out after the blooming period has ended for the season.

For propagation, you can take stem cuttings, making sure to leave at least three leaves on each cutting. Alternatively, you can encourage rooting by bending a branch down to the ground and covering it with soil.
