Species:zebrina

Family:Commelinaceae

Tradescantia zebrina, a popular herbaceous perennial, is frequently cultivated as a houseplant. Its striking variegated leaves feature a mix of green, white, and gray, complemented by purple undersides. The leaves are oval-shaped and clasp the stem at their base. While tiny lavender-purple flowers with three petals bloom occasionally indoors, the plant is more recognized for its foliage. The nodes along the stem are typically spaced about an inch apart, which is how it earned the nickname "inch plant." This resilient plant adapts well to various growing conditions, thriving best in filtered sunlight, average indoor temperatures, and moist yet well-drained soil. Watering should be reduced during the winter months, and pinching back the stems encourages a bushier appearance. In spring, a more severe pruning can be performed, and during the summer, the plant can be placed on a sheltered patio. It is often seen in hanging pots and is also known by the names Tradescantia pendula and Zebrina pendula.

When exposed to full sunlight, the plant exhibits its most vibrant colors; however, in southern regions, intense sunlight may dull its hues. In low-light conditions, the lower leaves may drop, and the remaining foliage can lose some of its vivid coloration.

Regular trimming helps maintain the plant's shape and promotes denser growth. Additionally, removing leggy stems provides opportunities for cuttings, which can be used for propagation. Although it is generally treated as a perennial, these cuttings can also be utilized for new plants.

In terms of pests and diseases, Tradescantia zebrina is relatively trouble-free. However, it can suffer from root and stem rot if the soil remains overly wet. It's important to keep an eye out for pests such as aphids, mealybugs, scale, whiteflies, and spider mites, as they can become problematic if not addressed. Some individuals may experience skin irritation upon contact with the plant's sap.

Valued for its vibrant, eye-catching foliage and rapid growth, this plant is commonly found indoors, either in hanging baskets or as ground cover in interior landscapes. Each flower blooms for just one day.
