Phonetic Spelling:ra-VEN-ay-ee
Genus:Tripidium
Species:ravennae
Family:Poaceae
Often referred to as Hardy Pampas Grass, Ravenna Grass, or Plume Grass, this plant boasts a stunning feathery appearance that brings a touch of drama to any garden. The gentle rustling of its leaves in the breeze can create a soothing atmosphere. Its leaves, which are about an inch wide and initially exhibit a hint of pink, transition to a silvery hue before taking on a reddish tint in the fall. In late summer, it produces large, plume-like flower clusters that rise well above the foliage, making them ideal for both fresh and dried floral arrangements. The color transformation from soft pink to silver, and finally to red in autumn, ensures it remains visually appealing throughout the winter months.
This drought-resistant grass thrives best in dry to moderately moist, well-drained soils under full sunlight, as it struggles in overly moist or nutrient-rich environments where it often requires additional support. With a coarse to medium texture and an upright to open growth habit, it serves as an excellent screening plant or a striking specimen. To maintain its health, it is advisable to cut it back to the ground in late winter or early spring, as the center of the clump tends to die out over time. Under optimal growing conditions, it may also self-seed.
When handling this plant, it's important to wear gloves due to the sharp edges of its leaves. Additionally, be aware that it can be quite aggressive and challenging to eradicate if necessary.
