Phonetic Spelling:VY-teks try-FOH-lee-a lit-or-AY-liss
Genus:Vitex
Species:trifolia
Family:Lamiaceae
Beach Vitex was introduced to the shores of North Carolina from Korea in the mid-1980s as a measure to combat coastal erosion. This plant is highly resilient to both salt spray and drought conditions. Within a short period, it began to proliferate across natural beaches and uninhabited islands, thanks to its fast-growing runners. However, Beach Vitex poses a significant risk to indigenous dune vegetation, as well as to the nesting habitats of sea turtles and the foraging and nesting grounds of shorebirds along the coast from Georgia to Maryland.
The North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services has classified Beach Vitex as a Class B Noxious Weed. Consequently, in the coastal regions of North Carolina, it is now prohibited to sell, distribute, or relocate this species between properties.
