Genus:Zanthoxylum
Species:simulans
Family:Rutaceae
Zanthoxylum simulans, commonly known as flatspine prickly-ash, is a deciduous shrub characterized by its upright, vase-like form and a broad, flat crown adorned with glossy, dark green, pinnately compound leaves. Its bark is generally smooth, punctuated by prominent spines on the branches and prickles along the trunk. In mid-summer, small green flowers bloom, adding a soft texture to the landscape. These inflorescences eventually develop into dark red fruits, which are harvested and dried to create a spice reminiscent of pepper. Z. simulans flourishes both as a standalone specimen and when grouped together in plantings.
