Phonetic Spelling:am-SO-nee-uh hew-BRIK-tee-eye
Genus:Amsonia
Species:hubrichtii
Family:Apocynaceae
This hardy plant is a rare herbaceous perennial belonging to the Apocynaceae family, native to the Ouachita Mountains in central Arkansas. It thrives in average, well-drained soil and prefers full sun to partial shade. Although it grows slowly, taking one to two years to reveal its full beauty, it develops upright clumps adorned with feathery green leaves, making it a stunning backdrop for shorter annuals and perennials.
After the flowering period, slender, elongated seed pods appear. From afar, this plant can be mistaken for a lily.
In terms of pests and diseases, it faces no significant issues. However, excessive shade can cause the plants to become floppy, so it’s advisable to trim them back after flowering. Care should be taken during this process, as the milky sap can irritate the skin.
