Phonetic Spelling:sel-ASS-trus SKAN-dens
Genus:Celastrus
Species:scandens
Family:Celastraceae
This fast-growing climbing vine is particularly recognized for its vibrant red berries and striking yellow foliage during autumn. Birds are attracted to its fruit, which is also popular for use in dried floral arrangements. However, it can become weedy. The species is mainly dioecious, meaning it has distinct male and female plants, although some may produce a few perfect flowers. To yield the appealing fruit characteristic of this vine, female plants require a male pollinator. Unfortunately, many nurseries do not specify whether the vines are male or female, unlike the common practice with hollies. Typically, one male plant is sufficient for every six to nine female plants. This vine is native to the southeastern region and can thrive in various soil types, though it does not tolerate overly wet conditions. It is less invasive compared to C. orbiculatus.
Poison Delivery Method: Ingestion.
