  • Photo of Eleutherococcus sieboldianus (Eleutherococcus sieboldianuss)

Phonetic Spelling:el-ew-ther-oh-KOK-us see-bold-ee-AH-nus

Genus:Acanthopanax

Species:sieboldianus

Family:Araliaceae

The five-fingered aralia, while part of the aralia family, does not belong to the genus Aralia. This upright shrub features arching branches that tend to droop. It can be pruned back significantly and is easy to transplant, thriving even in less-than-ideal growing conditions. The plant is known for its ability to sucker and withstand shearing. It can flourish in a range of light conditions, from full sun to shade, and prefers well-drained soil, although it can also tolerate clay, sandy environments, drought, and pollution. Its thorny nature makes it an excellent choice for creating screens or security plantings, as well as for use in shrub borders, foundation plantings, or as a backdrop in garden beds.
