Phonetic Spelling:frah-GAYR-ee-ah ah-nah-NAH-sah
Genus:Fragaria
Species:x ananassa
Family:Rosaceae
The strawberry is a perennial plant that forms a rosette and belongs to the rose family. It originated in Europe as a result of an unintentional hybridization between a North American species and one from Chile. Strawberries are commonly cultivated in gardens and on a commercial scale for their delicious red fruits. They are typically categorized into two types: June-bearing and ever-bearing. These plants propagate by producing runners that take root easily, and these can be pruned to enhance fruit yield.
When planting strawberries, they should be spaced 1 to 2.5 feet apart in rows that are 3 to 5 feet apart. In the initial year, it is advisable to remove the flowers to allow the plants to establish themselves. Given that strawberry roots are relatively short, they require regular watering, approximately 1 inch of water per week. They can also thrive in raised beds or containers, but it is important to replace the plants every 3 to 4 years.
Strawberry plants are susceptible to various pests and diseases.
