  • Photo of Juniperus x pfitzeriana (Juniperus x pfitzerianas)

Phonetic Spelling:joo-NIP-er-us fit-zehr-ee-AYE-nuh

Genus:Juniperus

Species:

Family:Cupressaceae

This evergreen shrub, belonging to the Cupressaceae family, is a versatile choice for hedges, foundation plantings, or rock gardens. Certain cultivars of Juniperus x pfitzeriana, a hybrid resulting from the crossbreeding of Juniperus chinensis and Juniperus sabina, can remain low enough to function as a spreading groundcover. Its foliage features scale-like leaves that emit a pleasant fragrance when crushed. The branches extend at a 45-degree angle from the trunk, adding visual interest during winter as they retain their green color throughout the season.

Juniperus x pfitzeriana thrives in locations with average moisture levels and well-drained soil, ideally in full sunlight. It is adaptable to various environments, from urban settings to coastal areas, and can withstand conditions such as drought, erosion, dry rocky soil, clay, and air pollution. However, it does not tolerate wet soil well. Regular pruning is recommended to preserve its compact form, and it is rarely affected by deer.

In terms of pests and diseases, this plant generally faces no significant threats. While it may encounter occasional pests like aphids, bagworms, webworms, and scale, it is largely resilient. Junipers can be prone to tip and needle blights, and cedar-apple rust, along with similar rust diseases, utilize junipers during part of their life cycle. Root rot can develop, especially in overly wet, poorly drained soils, and cankers may affect the bark or main stems.
