This annual vine thrives in light, moist soil and can be sown directly outdoors or started indoors as seedlings. In regions like Cameroon, Sudan, and southern Africa, the leaves and immature fruits of Momordica balsamina are prepared and consumed as a vegetable. While the young, bitter fruits are generally considered edible, the mature fruits can induce vomiting and diarrhea and may be toxic. In Namibia, the vibrant red pulp of the fruit is consumed. It's important to note that the ripe fruit can be harmful to dogs if ingested.
