Chinese Photina is a decorative shrub native to Asia, belonging to the rose family. It typically thrives on slopes, in dense thickets, or along riverbanks. When fully grown, it can reach heights of up to 15 feet and spread about 10 feet wide. The shrub features evergreen leaves and produces clusters of small white flowers from May to June. These flowers give way to pomes that turn red by late summer and remain on the plant throughout winter, adding visual interest to the winter landscape.
This shrub flourishes in well-drained, moist, and fertile soils, preferring full sun to partial shade. It is ideal for placement in the back or middle of a shrub border, or can be used effectively as a hedge or screen. For propagation, semi-hard stem cuttings taken in the summer are recommended.
In terms of pests and diseases, leaf spot can occur, particularly during hot and humid summers. The plant is also vulnerable to fire blight and powdery mildew. Common insect issues include aphids and scale.
