Phonetic Spelling:PY-nus a-ris-TAH-tuh

Genus:Pinus

Species:aristata

Family:Pinaceae

This tree, one of the oldest on the planet, is a charming dwarf shrub that exhibits a unique, irregular spread—rounded and flattened—during its youth, characteristics it maintains as it ages. Its trunk, which tapers and twists, can reach a diameter of up to 3 feet. The aromatic blue-green needles are coated in a resinous substance.

It thrives in various soil conditions, including dry, rocky, or nutrient-poor environments, although it may require protection from drying winds.

This species produces both pollen and seed cones. The pollen cones, which are bluish-red, have a somewhat rounded shape, though not perfectly spherical. After about two years, the seed cones mature on the tree and eventually drop to the ground. Initially cylindrical, they transform into an egg shape with a triangular base, changing from purple to brown upon opening. The seeds themselves are elongated and take on a grey-brown to black hue.
