Phonetic Spelling:PY-nus ED-yew-liss

Genus:Pinus

Species:edulis

Family:Pinaceae

The Pinyon Pine is a rugged evergreen tree characterized by its horizontal branches. In its youth, it boasts a symmetrical and bushy appearance, but as it matures, it develops a flat crown.

The seeds of this tree, known by various names such as pinyon nuts, Indian nuts, pine nuts, and pinones, are quite delicious and can be enjoyed in several ways—raw, roasted, or incorporated into confections.

This species produces both pollen and seed cones. The pollen cones are egg-shaped and range in color from yellow to red-brown. Meanwhile, the seed cones also take on an egg-like shape and take about two years to mature after pollination, eventually becoming more rounded before the seeds are dispersed.

In the United States, the Pinyon Pine is primarily found in the southwestern region, thriving at elevations above 4,500 feet on dry slopes, mesas, and plateaus. Its wood is often utilized for making fence posts and as firewood.
