Plant Profile: Pinus armandi

Names

Armand Pine, Chinese White Pine, David's Pine

  • Photo of Pinus armandi (Pinus armandis)

Phonetic Spelling:PY-nus ar-MOND-ee-eye

Genus:Pinus

Species:armandi

Family:Pinaceae

This unique plant features large cones and long, vibrant blue-green needles. The weight of the cones can cause the branches to droop. In younger specimens, the crown of the Chinese White Pine is conical, characterized by whorled branches. As the tree matures, the crown takes on a rounded shape, and the branches become more irregular.

The Chinese White Pine produces both pollen and seed cones. The pollen cones, which are a greenish-white color, appear at the base of new shoots. The seed cones, shaped like a conical cylinder, start off green and turn brown once they have released their seeds.

This plant faces few issues with insects or diseases; however, it is more susceptible to problems in heavy clay soils.
