Plant Profile: Prunus x subhirtella

Names

Higan Cherry, Rosebud Cherry, Spring Cherry

  • Photo of Prunus x subhirtella (Prunus x subhirtellas)

Phonetic Spelling:PROO-nus sub-HIR-tel-uh

Genus:Prunus

Species:subhirtella

Family:Roseaceae

Known for its longevity, this cherry tree thrives in full sunlight and prefers moist, well-drained soil. It grows upright and gradually spreads as it ages. This variety is more resilient to summer heat, winter cold, and clay soil compared to other cherry trees. It can be planted as a standout specimen, in small clusters, or along lawns, parks, and streets; however, it is often at risk of damage from deer.

Commercially, this tree is not widely available, and many trees marketed as Higan Cherry are actually different cultivars, with ‘Autumnalis Rosea’ being a popular choice. These cultivars tend to be shorter, featuring more vibrant flowers and weeping forms.

While Higan cherry is generally recognized for its strong disease resistance, it remains vulnerable to various insects and diseases, much like other cherry species.
