Family:Pinaceae
The 'Jeddeloh' cultivar is a compact, spreading variety that often features a central depression reminiscent of a bird's nest. Although it grows slowly, it can ultimately reach heights of 2 to 3 feet and widths of 3 to 4 feet, taking over a decade to achieve this size. Its striking bright green needles are spirally arranged along the gracefully arching stems, and mature plants may produce small cones measuring up to half an inch.
This plant thrives in shady, moist environments with excellent drainage. It is suitable for container gardening on patios, as a foundation plant, in groupings, or within rock gardens. Ideally, it prefers regions with cooler summers and should be shielded from harsh winter winds.
Potential issues include needle blight, canker, rust, and rot. The survival of this species in its natural habitat is threatened by the hemlock woolly adelgid, an insect that has severely impacted many wild specimens. Other less significant pests include bagworms, borers, leaf miners, sawflies, and spider mites.
