Family:Hyacinthaceae
There are two distinct species of Veltheimia that flower at different times throughout the year: one in spring and the other from autumn to early winter. The flowers exhibit a range of colors, including reds and yellows, making them highly decorative bulbs native to South Africa.
Veltheimia bracteata, which blooms in spring, originates from the eastern regions of South Africa. This nearly evergreen variety thrives in light shade and requires less water during the summer months. Its leaves are glossy, varying from pale to deep green, and it produces pink tubular flowers. Depending on the climate, it may remain evergreen or become leafless for a few months during late summer into fall.
On the other hand, Veltheimia capensis hails from the drier western part of South Africa and flowers from fall into early winter. This deciduous plant flourishes in full sunlight, which promotes its blooming on rocky slopes during late fall and winter. Its foliage is a dull gray-green, and it features clusters of reddish-pink flowers that form a dense head.
For planting, use a pot that is at least 6 inches deep, placing the bulb at a depth of 1 inch so that the top is just above the soil surface. When starting from seeds, position the pots in a shaded area to ensure they experience a temperature variation between day and night.
In terms of pests, diseases, and other plant-related issues, Veltheimia species do not face any significant problems.
