Tea Viburnum is a Chinese shrub known for its smaller flower clusters compared to other viburnums, yet it stands out for its prolific fruit production. To ensure fruiting, it's best to plant multiple shrubs together. This plant typically reaches heights of 8 to 12 feet and spreads 6 to 8 feet wide, featuring a loose vase-like shape. It often sheds the lower third of its leaves, resulting in a somewhat leggy look. The shrub produces 1 to 2-inch cymes of white flowers that are quite attractive, followed by an abundance of striking yellow-orange fruits that eventually turn bright red. In the fall, the foliage takes on a subtle red hue.
Tea Viburnum thrives in moist, slightly acidic loamy soils but can adapt to various soil types, including those that are somewhat boggy. For optimal growth, it should be planted in full sun to partial shade, particularly in shrub borders, to help conceal its leggy appearance and enhance fruit production. It can also be successfully cultivated near streams, ponds, or bogs.
