Phonetic Spelling:ad-on-ID-ee-uh mer-IL-ee-eye
Genus:Adonidia
Species:merrillii
Family:Arecaceae
The Christmas Palm features a slender gray trunk that grows rapidly to approximately 6 feet (1.83 m) before slowing down, maintaining its form until it reaches a maximum height of 25 feet (7.62 meters). This solitary palm showcases stiff, arching green fronds that can extend 4 to 5 feet in length. During mid-summer, subtle clusters of cream-colored flowers emerge at the base of the canopy, followed by small green fruits measuring about 1 inch (2.54 cm). As winter approaches, these mature fruits transform into a vibrant red. While the trunks can be planted in groups, typically in threes to simulate a multi-trunk appearance, the name "Christmas Palm" is derived from the seasonal change of the fruit's color. Due to its high sensitivity to frost and freezing conditions, it is advisable to cultivate this palm in a container that can be relocated indoors during colder months.
This palm is ideal for small residential gardens and can also serve as a street tree in tropical regions.
In terms of pests and diseases, the Christmas Palm is vulnerable to a severe bacterial illness known as lethal yellowing and may experience boron deficiency. To support its growth in nutrient-poor soil, it is recommended to use a fertilizer specifically formulated for palms.
