Bugleweed is a robust and rapidly spreading ground cover that belongs to the mint family. This herbaceous perennial thrives in moist environments but can also adapt to moderately dry soils, making it an ideal choice for cool, shaded areas where grass struggles to grow. Its lush, compact growth features lovely clusters of small purple flowers. To manage overcrowding, divide the plants in spring or fall, or propagate them through seeds or cuttings. It’s important to avoid planting in overly wet, heavy soils and to ensure adequate air circulation. While its dense mat can effectively suppress weeds, be cautious about planting it near perennial beds or lawns, as its tendency to spread may lead to difficulties in removal.
As mentioned, there are several Bugleweed cultivars that retain the desirable characteristics of this ground cover while providing a range of leaf and flower colors, as well as variations in size and spread.
In terms of plant health, crown rot can be an issue in the humid, deep Southern regions and in heavy soil conditions.
