Phonetic Spelling:ah-RUN-kus dye-oh-EE-kus

Genus:Aruncus

Species:dioicus

Family:Rosaceae

Goat's Beard is a perennial plant native to the rose family, characterized by its rhizomatous growth. It thrives in the moist, fertile woodlands and mountainous regions of the eastern United States. This species is dioecious, meaning it has distinct male and female plants. The male flowers are particularly striking, featuring numerous stamens, while the female flowers possess only three. Goat's Beard can grow into a robust bush, reaching heights of 3 to 6 feet, making it a prominent addition to any garden. Its blooms resemble those of astilbe but are significantly larger, extending up to a foot in length.

This plant flourishes in rich, moist soils that retain moisture and prefers conditions ranging from full sun to partial shade. In the southern parts of its habitat, it benefits from some protection against the intense afternoon sun. It’s important to provide ample space for growth, as it may take two to three seasons for the plant to reach maturity.

Goat's Beard is an excellent choice for rain gardens, as well as for planting along stream banks or ponds. It also works well at the back of a woodland perennial garden.

In terms of pests and diseases, Goat's Beard is somewhat vulnerable to leaf spot.
