Cumberland Rosemary is a small, indigenous shrub belonging to the mint family, native to the Cumberland Plateau. It typically thrives in sandy or gravelly stream banks that experience seasonal flooding, followed by relatively dry summers. The plant's stems spread along the ground and can take root at various nodes, creating clumps or mats.
The leaves emit a pleasant fragrance reminiscent of culinary rosemary, while the delicate lavender-pink flowers bloom from May to June. This shrub prefers well-drained sandy soil and less fertile ground, thriving in full sunlight but can also tolerate partial shade. It is excellent for naturalizing and has the ability to reseed itself, which is beneficial since it tends to have a short lifespan.
Although it is classified as threatened in its natural habitat, Cumberland Rosemary has been cultivated and is available for purchase.
