Phonetic Spelling:dra-SEE-nah SINK-tuh

Genus:Dracaena

Species:cincta

Family:Asparagaceae

The Dragon Tree is a resilient evergreen houseplant native to Madagascar. In its natural environment, it can reach heights of up to 20 feet, growing as either a shrub or a tree. When cultivated indoors, it typically grows between 6 to 15 feet, although it can be pruned to maintain a shorter stature. The upper spiral of leaves can be propagated to create new plants.

The plant features long, strap-like leaves that spiral around the trunk, with older leaves eventually dropping off and leaving behind unique diamond-shaped scars. These leaves are a deep green color with reddish edges, and the plant seldom flowers when kept indoors.

For optimal growth, use a loamy potting mix that offers excellent drainage. During the growing season, the Dragon Tree requires moderate moisture, but watering should be reduced in the winter months. It thrives in bright, indirect light and prefers moderate humidity; low humidity can cause the tips of the leaves to turn brown.

Quick Identification Tips:
Pests: Watch out for spider mites and scale.
