Phonetic Spelling:miss-KANTH-us pur-PUR-ah-senz
Genus:Miscanthus
Species:
Family:Poaceae
This adaptable plant features elegant, arching, and finely textured grass that forms lush, reddish-green clusters. Its flexible leaves sway gracefully in the breeze, emerging from a central clump and fanning out like a fountain. Standing at 3 to 4 feet tall, these clusters showcase stunning purple-red or red-orange foliage in the fall, which is perfect for drying. The 8- to 10-inch-long plumes transform to white and remain through the winter months.
To maintain visual appeal and protect the crowns, it’s best to leave the foliage intact throughout winter. In late winter, just before new growth begins, trim the foliage down to the ground.
This plant possesses three distinctive traits: it thrives in cold climates, it is typically non-invasive as it rarely produces fertile seeds, and it is naturally small rather than dwarf-like, preferring slightly more moisture.
