Algae are simple, rootless organisms resembling plants, often linked to the green film that appears on ponds. One particular species, Nostoc sp., is frequently found in nurseries, where it develops dark green, gelatinous clumps on consistently damp surfaces like nursery ground cloth, black plastic, or gravel pads. These tissue mats can become slippery when wet, posing safety risks. In the absence of moisture, they dry out into a flaky brown substance that can be easily removed, but they quickly reappear once watering resumes. To minimize algae growth, enhancing drainage and watering earlier in the day can help surfaces dry out. Currently, there are no chemical treatments specifically approved for these organisms.
