Family:Rosaceae

'Otto Luyken' is a compact evergreen shrub that typically reaches heights of 3 to 4 feet and can spread between 6 to 8 feet. With time, it may grow to heights of 6 to 10 feet. This variety is known for its abundant flowering, so it is advisable to prune it as necessary after the blooming period. It flowers in the spring and maintains a dense growth habit, thriving even in shaded areas. Introduced by Hesse Nurseries in Germany around 1968, it flourishes in soils rich in organic matter with excellent drainage. While it can tolerate shade, it prefers it in warmer climates.

In the marketplace, 'Otto Luyken' is often mistaken for 'Zabeliana,' which has a more upright growth pattern, growing taller than it is wide (often referred to as "refrigerator form") and features spreading leaves. In contrast, 'Otto Luyken' has a broader growth habit ("freezer form") with leaves that ascend at a 45 to 60-degree angle from the stem; both varieties possess entire leaves, though occasionally one or two may have minute teeth. They can be distinguished from 'Schipkaensis,' which has toothed margins near the apex, while 'Otto Luyken' and 'Zabeliana' have smooth edges. This shrub is resilient to alkaline conditions, drought, poor soil, pollution, and can withstand heavy pruning. It shows moderate salt tolerance but does not respond well to excessive fertilization. With a rapid growth rate, it develops competitive roots and may face issues with pests and diseases.
