Phonetic Spelling:gai-LAR-dee-ah BY gran-dih-FLOR-ah

Genus:Gaillardia

Species:

Family:Asteraceae

This Blanket Flower is a crossbreed between the perennial gaillardia (G. aristata) and a 2-foot tall annual variety (G. pulchella), typically having a shorter lifespan. It thrives in coastal dune environments and is notably resistant to deer damage. Various cultivars are available, offering a range of colors and heights.

Most plants reach heights of 1 to 3 feet and spread about 2 feet wide. If regularly deadheaded, they will produce blooms throughout much of the season. The stems and leaves are covered in dense hairs, and the flowers exhibit a daisy-like appearance, often featuring two colors.

For optimal growth, good drainage is essential, as these plants cannot withstand winter in poorly drained clay soils. Enrich the soil with humus and maintain consistent moisture. Once established, they can tolerate some drought. This plant is perfect for adding vibrant colors to the front of garden borders, in containers, on patios, or along pathways. It attracts bees and butterflies, and if some seeds are left to mature, goldfinches will enjoy them.

Quick Identification Tips:
This plant may be prone to powdery mildew, leaf spot, aster yellows, and leafhoppers, but these issues are generally not considered severe.
