  • Photo of Iberis sempervirens (Iberis sempervirenss)

Phonetic Spelling:eye-BEER-is sem-per-VY-renz

Genus:Iberis

Species:sempervirens

Family:Brassicaceae

Candytuft is an excellent choice for accentuating borders, pathways, and rock gardens. It thrives in containers and can be effectively used on rock walls. To maintain its shape and prevent it from becoming tall and leggy, it is advisable to prune candytuft back significantly at least every other year. Although classified as a woody subshrub, it is commonly treated as a herbaceous perennial. This plant is sometimes susceptible to deer damage. Fortunately, candytuft is drought-resistant, moderately tolerant of salt, and generally repellent to both deer and rabbits.

This plant prefers full sun to partial shade and can adapt to various soil types, as long as there is adequate drainage. It is pH adaptable, easy to transplant, and relatively free from pests.

Quick Identification Tips:

Potential issues include caterpillars, slugs, and snails. Additionally, candytuft may experience problems such as downy mildew, powdery mildew, fungal leaf spots, and rust. Excess moisture can lead to crown rot, while harsh winter conditions may cause leaf scorch from sun exposure.
