Japanese Photinia is a sizable evergreen shrub or a small tree that can reach heights of up to 20 feet. It typically flowers in late spring, making it the last among photinia varieties to bloom. However, its strongly scented flowers are often considered unpleasant by many. The new leaves emerge in a vibrant reddish-bronze hue, and reddish buds can be seen throughout much of the year. This plant is tolerant of alkaline soils and can withstand drought conditions, but it does not fare well in windy environments. Among the photinias, it is the least resistant to cold temperatures. Additionally, it can be cultivated as a small tree, though it may encounter issues with pests and diseases, such as leaf spot.
