Family:Oleaceae
Japanese Privet is a robust evergreen shrub or small tree that can grow quickly, reaching heights of up to 3 feet in sunny to partially shaded environments. This plant is characterized by its dense, upright form and its resilience to drought and salt spray. It can withstand heavy pruning and thrives in various soil types, although it does not fare well in consistently wet conditions. In late spring, it produces flowers that many find unpleasantly fragrant. With its glossy, dark green leaves, Japanese Privet is often used in landscaping around buildings, where it is commonly shaped into a rounded form resembling a "giant meatball." It can also be cultivated as a small tree, but it bears toxic berries.
In disturbed areas near buildings, Japanese Privet can become weedy and has established itself in moist environments. While it serves as an evergreen ornamental shrub in landscaping, it is not ideal for use as a foundation plant. This species is adaptable to alkaline soils, pollution, shade, and dry conditions, and it is also cold-hardy. However, it does not tolerate wet soil well. Additionally, Japanese Privet is prone to issues such as copper deficiency and infestations of whiteflies.
It is classified as an invasive species in North Carolina.
