Species:nipponica
Family:Rosaceae
Spiraea nipponica, commonly known as Snowmound Spiraea, is a deciduous shrub that flourishes in dry conditions and grows quickly to its mature size. While many Spiraea varieties typically reach heights of 5 to 8 feet with a similar spread, Snowmound is somewhat smaller, usually growing between 2 to 4 feet tall. In its early stages, the shrub has a slender, slightly arching form, but as it matures, it becomes denser and takes on a more rounded shape. This plant thrives in average, well-drained soils with medium moisture and full sunlight, which enhances its flowering potential. However, in regions with hot summers, it can also prosper with some light afternoon shade. Snowmound is adaptable to various soil types, including clay. To prolong its blooming period and enhance its overall appearance, it is advisable to promptly remove spent flower clusters, and light shearing can be beneficial. Remember that Spiraea blooms on new growth, so if pruning is necessary, it should be done in late winter or early spring.
The Snowmound Spiraea flowers in late spring, later than other white-flowered varieties, producing a delightful cascade of small, clustered white blooms that blanket the branches, resembling a mound of snow. Its blue-green leaves are narrow triangles with a sharp angle at the base, generally narrower than those of S. x vanhouttei and larger than what is typically advertised for 'Snowmound.' This makes it an excellent choice for mass plantings, as ground cover, or as a front feature in shrub borders. Both flowers and leaves emerge on the same side of the arching branches, and the blooms are particularly appealing to butterflies. Additionally, this plant is rarely affected by deer.
In terms of pests and diseases, Snowmound Spiraea does not face significant threats. However, it can be vulnerable to various issues that affect other members of the rose family, such as leaf spots, fire blight, powdery mildew, rots, aphids, leaf rollers, and scale insects.
